ARTIST GRACIE KENDAL AND THE VANEEESA BLAYLOCK COMPANY EXPLORE A WOMAN’S RELATIONSHIP WITH HER AVATAR

Eostara (207,51,263) – February 28, 2010 – Gracie Kendal in collaboration with the Vaneeesa Blaylock Company will present a performance art installation called “VB15 – Gracie / Kris” on Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 12PM to 2PM SLT at the Eostara Art Gallery in second Life (www.secondlife.com).   http://slurl.com/secondlife/Eostara/208/51/264

Kendal, also known as Kristine Schomaker in real life, is completing her Thesis for the Masters Degree in Art through the execution of her “The Gracie Kendal Project-A Conversation with my Avatar” where she utilizes installation, text, photography, mixed media, video and performance to explore her real life through the lens of her second life avatar.

“I am projecting myself onto another form and confronting my own imperfections,” Kendal says.  “My work deals with the process of becoming self-aware while living in a media-saturated, technologically advancing society.”

Kendal has teamed up with the Vaneeesa Blaylock Company to present 16 avatar versions of herself in a two-hour presentation of sculpture, identity, beauty, reality, romanticism, and a moment of temporal and spacial conflux.

“The human body has been represented in painting and sculpture for 500 years, but always mediated by the artist’s hand,” Company Director Vaneeesa Blaylock said.  “In a world where avatars are emerging as new citizens, we will present the avatar as a work of sculpture directly to the audience.”

For more information about the Gracie Kendal Project contact Gracie Kendal or Kris Schomaker or visit https://graciekendal.wordpress.com.  To learn more about the “VB15 – Gracie / Kris” installation or the Eostara Art Gallery, contact Vaneeesa Blaylock or visit http://vaneeesa.blogspot.com.

In the past year Vaneeesa Blaylock / Company has produced numerous performance artworks in Second Life, including 14 large-scale productions, 3 duets, and 11 solo works. Ms. Blaylock holds an MFA in New Media from the Koninklijk Conservatorium and a degree in Choreography from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

Kris Schomaker (aka Gracie Kendal) lives in Southern California and will graduate in May 2010 with her MA in Art from California State University, Northridge. She has been an artist for over 12 years experimenting in various interdisciplinary art forms, and is currently exploring her own identity through new media and performance art.

Will the real Kris and Gracie please stand up?

Yesterday I had an art talk at the Artropolis Art Community in Second Life. It was so great to be amongst all of my friends in second life and talk about my project. Thank you all so much for your unwaivering support.

When I started “The Gracie Kendal Project” on November 1st, I never could have imagined it would be where it is today.  And where is that you ask? Well if you missed the talk yesterday, right now, I have become, or am becoming a performance artist. WOW!! I started out a painter and evolved into a performance artist!! I LOVE it!!!

I have never felt so alive, so right, so real… than I have the past couple weeks planning this performance. I say performance, but it may not be that after all. I mean I am going to change roles, transform into my avatar, Gracie Kendal, but is that really correct? I mean, I am Gracie Kendal. I have never denied that. I have never role-played in Second Life to this extent. I have always said, Gracie is me and I am Gracie. Gracie is Kris and Kris is Gracie. Yes we have our differences. But doesn’t everyone have the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. Gracie is both of those to me, and more. She is my conscious, my best friend, my confidant, my sister. She knows all my inner secrets, loves, yearnings, desires… all my faults, my imperfections, everything. Gracie is someone who I strive to be. A more beautiful, free, independent, sassy, sexy, intelligent vision of myself. If that makes sense. I have said, that I have been lost. Kris has been lost. Gracie is my saviour. She is helping me get out of this shell I have been hidden under for many many years now. I am finding myself through her.

I wish I could say, I am free already. But I am not. I still have a long way to go to find my inner beauty. Someone asked me when the end of the project will be. I can’t give a date. This project is part of my MA Thesis which will culminate in May with a group show in the art gallery at the University, but I plan on taking it much farther than that. This is my life. This is my love. I have never felt so enlivened, so refreshed, so passionate about anything in my entire life. This is the most important thing I have done in my life.

I want to thank you all for joining me on this journey!! You guys Rock!!!

The Gracie Kendal Project-  A Conversation with my Avatar
(A mixed-reality project/collaboration between Kris Schomaker and Gracie Kendal)

Artist Statement
The Gracie Kendal Project is a close-up daily view of a personal, social and psychological co-existence with my virtual persona. Using installation, text, photography, mixed media, video and performance, I am projecting myself onto another form and confronting my own imperfections.
My work deals with the process of becoming self-aware while living in a media-saturated, technologically advancing society. It is symbolic of the personal anxiety and loss of identity which occurs in a world where visually aggressive advertisements dictate how to look, how to act, what to buy and, most importantly, what is desirable. In this environment I find it difficult to be comfortable in my own skin. My sense of self has become dislodged and torn apart.
Through documentation, I construct a narrative of self that represents me and is me, one that helps to deconstruct ideas of normalcy and authenticity. My narrative questions identity.  Who am I? What am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose? What do I really want? Am I happy?

To my friends and family,

I need your help.
As most of you know, I am finishing my Masters Degree in Art, graduating in May of this year from California State University, Northridge.
I am currently working on my Thesis project which is a mixed reality performance between me and my avatar from the web 2.0 virtual world of Second Life. Her name is Gracie Kendal.

The final culmination of my project involves changing roles with Gracie. I am going to be her for a couple days. This will include getting a nose piercing, coloring my hair platinum blond, having it curled, and my make-up done. Buying a couple outfits that are classy but sexy. Going out to a jazz club, or dancing. An art opening, etc. I am going to be documenting this transformation through photography and video.
Everything I do, wear, use will be kept, documented and used in my thesis show in May. I’m so excited about this project. It is one of the most important things I have ever done in my life.

As one of my friends or family, you are a valuable part of this project. I wouldn’t be here without your help and support through the years, months and days leading to my graduation. I would like to ask your help one more time.

Will you help sponsor my project and become a donor?
100% of your support goes to cover the cost of:  filming-camera, mic lighting $500; photography-large scale portraits, film development, etc $500; wardrobe- Dress, outfit, shoes, etc $300; nose piercing plus jewelry-$50 and other extras it is going to take to transform Kris Schomaker into her avatar, Gracie Kendal.  This may include cost of cover charge for clubs, gas to get to locations, etc.
The culminating art work will be a mixed reality video of this piece, and all of the items and documentation used.
Any amount you can spare would be so much appreciated :)))

Calling home…

Home: base- the place where you are stationed and from which missions start and end; place where something began and flourished; an environment offering affection and security; “home is where the heart is”; a familiar or usual setting : congenial environment;  a place of origin; relaxed and comfortable; at ease “felt completely at home on the stage”; may relate instead to a mental or emotional state of refuge or comfort.

BE PART OF SOMETHING IMPORTANT!!! Help transform Kris Schomaker into her avatar, Gracie Kendal.

To my friends and family,

This project is a very personal and also universal story that I believe a lot of people can relate to. This is from my artist statement:

Who am I?
