So if you didn’t know, I am currently creating avatars. When I bought these fiberglass female figures, they were called mannequins. My friends called them Manny for short. They are no longer mannequins.
Just as in the virtual world of Second Life where you can create your own avatar to represent who you want to be online, I am creating avatars in the real world. These figures will represent me. Their painted bodies represent skins that I feel comfortable in. My own art. In my work on identity and body image, specifically surrounding my own body, I have always said I am not comfortable in my own skin. I am actually working on changing this. This new project is a step in the right direction. When I have an installation of these avatars, which will eventually be at least 32 avatars, 16 physical and 16 virtual, the show will be called “A comfortable skin.”
