“I am so glad you are growing your hair out!” (NSFW)

Over the last couple of weeks, I have heard this quote or one similar from several different people. While I was gracious and said “Thank you” I later thought, I should have said “Fuck you.” Seriously, what does that even mean?

What it means is, I am going to continue to get my hair buzzed until society/the media gets over itself and accepts that all people are beautiful and no person should be judged, valued, loved or even liked based on their appearance alone. Now I totally understand that I will probably die of old age with a buzzed head but I am content to let that happen as long as it empowers me to keep the conversation going about society’s obsession with appearance.

After the last person said “I am so glad you are growing your hair out” I didn’t shrink in the corner and wonder if I look that bad with my hair short (Ok I did wonder a little bit) Instead It made me want to change people’s minds, their perception of themselves and others even more. It did empower me to fight the good fight and continue my work on body image and self acceptance.

Did I tell you I was posing nude for a friend of mine? My good friend Rikki asked me one day if I would want to pose nude for a portrait. She thought it may be a great addition to my body image work. I thought so too, and said sure, without flinching. I have sat for her twice now and while I haven’t felt any different personally or emotionally it has been a lovely experience. We will see how I feel with the portrait done. It’s still a work in progress but here are a couple early shots…

017 018I am also planning a couple of performance art pieces where I will be in the nude… stay tuned!!

  1. You are so brave. I admire your ability to confront society’s fear around body image every single day. The truth is that we are all beautiful, and you not only know this but you live it. ❤

  2. I hate, hate, hate when people make qualified compliments (or what they perceive to be a compliment). What’s with the hair bit? Is the new uniform long lank tresses in ones eyes? Keep it the way you want Lady! I do.

  3. Oh BTW that is me, Pituca FairChang. Still an individualist in SL too with a default Avatar for 10 years and no animations.

  4. First off, as someone with a lot of female friends who sport buzzcuts, I’d say you have an excellent-looking one! In fact, it really looks good with your hair’s texture and coloring. I’m also surprised that someplace so supposedly with-it as LA has so many people who are not with-it about buzzcuts — they’ve been a counter-cultural statement in the punk and lesbian communities for literally decades. So tell the next person who gets in your face about your hair that they’re behind the times and should catch up already! 😀

Secondly, your nude portrait looks awesome, and you look awesome in it. (And I’m also someone who has seen a goodly number of nudes of women of size done as artistic and political statements.)

So keep on keeping on, dear — you’re doing the right-on thing.

  5. I feel your pain. *smiles and rubs her head thoughtfully. When I first cut my hair in middle school, my stepmother thought it was hilarious to call me her “son”. I laughed a few years ago when she cut it almost as short as I have it now. My sister who has always had long tresses down her back, chopped it off as well. It’s just easier and fun. Sometimes I bristle when I’m called “Sir”. But nowadays I just smile and keep trucking. People do ask when I’ll grow it, especially when I miss a few trips to the barber. Even the barbers get nervous. I’ve heard it’s bad luck to cut a woman’s hair. I’ve been told it’s in the bible somewhere, I’ve never bothered to look. I love the look on you. I like that you have the courage to color it. Forget the folks that don’t like it. It’s your head.
